Overview
Locale: Home of Jean Baptiste Valle, Spanish Commandant of Upper Louisiana, in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri Despite the cession of Louisiana to Spain in 1763, the vast area west of the Mississippi remained French in its loyalties, and when it was retroceded to France in 1800, President Jefferson had little trouble in buying it from Napoleon for the United States.
