Overview

Locale: The Ohio Land Company Office in Marietta, Ohio The desire of the Ohio Associates to purchase land in the Northwest Territory forced Congress to make provisions for the government of the land to be sold. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 resulted. The founding of Marietta in 1788 marked the beginning of the New England influence, which was destined to be of great importance in the cultural development of the entire Middle West.
