Overview

Locale: Statue of Paul Bunyan in Bemidji, Minnesota The lumber frontier of the Midwest was located chiefly in the region west and south of Lake Superior. The timber resources of the area could be marketed with relative ease, because of the adjacent streams flowed southward. Sawmill sites grew into towns and cities. Farmers followed the lumberjacks and settled the lands which had been cleared by the loggers, but the heyday of the colossus of Lumber lives on in the fabled prowess of Paul Bunyan.
