Overview
Locale: Early packing house in Cincinnati, Ohio Cincinnati was the first great center of meat packing in the Midwest. Before 1850, hundreds of thousands of barrels of pork were shipped down the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans, and after the region was connected to the East by railroads, increasing shipments moved toward the Atlantic seaboard. Only as the centers of corn-hog production shifted westward did “Porkopolis” lose its primacy in the packing industry.
