Locale: Onstot Cooper Shop in New Salem, Illinois The village was the frontier farmer’s link with the rest of the world. It met his economic and social needs and provided a forum for his interest in politics. In such a village, Abraham Lincoln, lived as a young man and developed many of the qualities with later sustained him in the dark days of the Civil War.
