Overview
At the turn of the century, the Angels returned to Earth, seeking to wipe out humanity in an apocalyptic fury. Devastated, mankind's last remnants moved underground to wait for the day when the Angels would come back to finish the job. Fifteen years later, that day has come... but this time, humanity is ready to fight back with terrifying bio-mechanical weapons known as the Evangelions. Watch as Shinji, Rei, Asuka and the rest of the mysterious shadow agency Nerv battle to save earth from total annihilation.

This is a difficult one for me to rate accurately to how I feel about it. Is it overhyped? Maybe a little, but it's also very influential on the anime genre as a whole. I was hooked in the early episodes, and I'm not into mecha stuff at all. There was a lot of mystery and emotional tension that was delivered really well and left you wanting more. At some point I got the feeling it was trying to do too much for the runtime it was given, not to mention production schedule and budget. There were a lot of things hanging in the air that would be tough to resolve cleanly. After finishing the anime, I think that ended up holding true. The ending is unexpected and subversive, and it does leave you with emotions. I'm just not convinced it elevates the overall experience. As mentioned by others, you kind of have to watch the epilogue movie to meaningfully conclude the series, but even then I felt like it didn't live up to its potential. If you're an anime fan, it's still a must watch of course. I don't feel like my time was wasted and ultimately, it is a work of art in every sense of the word. You can tell it was a passion project through and through. But it doesn't reach masterpiece status for me.
