Overview

Locale: Depot on the western end of the First Bridge across the Mississippi, in Davenport, Iowa The decade of the 1850’s saw many hundreds of miles of railroad construction, most of which connected the East with the West. These avenues of rapid transportation tied the economy of the Midwest to that of the Eastern seaboard and helped to consolidate the North in a time of sectional conflict.
