Overview

Locale: Old Stone Tavern on the National Road, at Wheeling, West Virginia The National Road was the first major project of internal improvement financed by Congress with federal funds. It unified East and West, promoted trade, led to the establishment of many modern cities, enhanced nationalism and gave the first great impetus to overland travel toward our western frontiers.
