Rosie Carr, an 18-year-old orphan, works as a lowly tavern barmaid in the spring of 1907 and is courted by street-trader Tommo.

Now in her 30s and married to Tommo, Rosie struggles to keep their London slum home together and raise their three kids.

On the horizon of the Second World War, 50something Rosie works as a cleaner at Harley and Coping’s machine tool plant, with Tommo working only occasionally, and her daughter Millie about to marry an aspiring mechanic and spare-time soldier.

A widow in her 60s, Rosie struggles to come to terms with life in the strange Welfare State of 1960 and deciding whether or not to live with her children.
