Why are French high school students so angry?

Since mid-September, hundreds of schools have seen protests, blockades, or temporary closures over overcrowded classes, absent teachers, and run-down buildings. The movement is the largest in about 30 years. Some demonstrations turned violent, leaving injuries on both sides amid a forceful police response. Though education is France’s biggest budget item, funding is unevenly distributed.
