Brenda has taken the first step in breaking away from her enclosed life as a housewife and mother, but her husband isn't as happy as she is about her new-found freedom.

Having left her family, Brenda finds that a business trip to Poland brings a wider view of the world, and she takes a new look at her marriage. While she is away, her enthusiasm begins to break down the cynical defences of her boss.

Barbara returns from her business trip to Poland. Can her marriage survive?

Brenda and Godfrey come face-to-face with the difficulties and differences in their marriage. Has she really outgrown their home and their life together? And how can the children handle their new knowledge of their mother's problems?

Visiting her elder son Walter at York University, Brenda takes the opportunity to evaluate her life.

Brenda has moved into a flat of her own, but the strains of trying to be both housewife and working woman are still growing. Her family are anxious to know what Brenda plans to do, and she realises she cannot put them off any longer.
