Overview

It's 2014 and tech billionaire Elon Musk unveils his plans for a self-driving car in front of an enthusiastic audience. What consumers don't know is that Tesla's "autopilot" function is far from road-ready, and new owners are being used to improve the software by providing their data. A fatal accident in Florida triggers a protracted lawsuit to hold Tesla accountable. And it's not the only incident. Shocking footage from dashcams and security cameras shows the ruthlessness of Tesla cars suddenly braking or accelerating—and the crashes that follow. Then, an employee leaks thousands of documents containing complaints from users.

I hope this doc reaches as wide an audience as possible. As I watched this at a movie festival, I could tell from the audience’s reactions that many people remain unaware of just how dangerous Elon Musk is. The documentary is thorough. While its primary focus is Tesla and the company’s autopilot technology, it still manages to address nearly all the significant aspects of Musk’s trajectory, from Tesla’s early days through late 2025. The only thing I would ask is for a more extensive segment on Musk and DOGE. It was brought up briefly; but it didn’t fully convey the extent of his corrupt and far overreaching involvement in the US government. Andreas Pichler, who directed this film, explained after the screening that the main reason the documentary took so long to produce was because they wanted to ensure that the topics they wanted to cover had reached a concrete conclusion. I would caution sensitive viewers for graphic and violent content, including real life footage of deaths. They do obscure any close-up shots of bodies etc, but it's definitely enough to warrant a warning, which was not present at any point of the film, and should have been included at the start.
